Allegheny Green + Innovation Festival
September 24
11 am – 5 pm
Hartwood Amphitheater – Middle Road
The Allegheny Green + Innovation Festival is a one day event that provides information to residents across our region on ways to integrate green and sustainable practices into their everyday lives.
The Allegheny Green & Innovation Festival, which celebrates Allegheny County’s evolution to a green economy, will feature green-living demonstrations and innovative technology displays. The festival will be a zero-waste event and include earth-friendly food and product vendors, free giveaways, while supplies last, and a special children’s area
To date, nearly 60 exhibitors and vendors have registered for the festival. The “I Made It! Market” will feature vendors selling craft items made exclusively from recycled and sustainable products. The Three Rivers Rain Garden Alliance will be on hand to provide information on developing rain gardens and using native plants in landscaping. Duquesne Light will distribute energy conservation kits to its customers. ACTION-Housing will educate residents on weatherization and other sustainability issues. 3 Rivers Wet Weather will provide information on watersheds and wet weather issues.
There will also be displays and demonstrations of locally developed innovative technology from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.
The festival will feature a special children’s area where Reuse-a-palooza, a program designed by Creative Reuse Pittsburgh, will provide hands-on exploratory activities focusing on creative reuse of materials. The University of Pittsburgh will conduct science outreach and let kids participate in biofuel experiments. The Carnegie Science Center’s “Science on the Road” program will provide liquid nitrogen ice cream demonstrations from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and liquid nitrogen flower demonstrations from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Several collection and donation drives will also take place during the day, including:
- The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank collecting non-perishable food items;
- The Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project collecting reusable tote bags to be used by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to distribute food;
- Green Grandma collecting hard-to-recycle plastic tops;
