The part-time Library Assistant will perform information services to the general public, assist public with finding library materials. Instructs patrons on how to use informational tools, provides reader’s advisory service, as well as reference and research assistance. Assists the head of children’s services with programs and outreach to the community as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This work involves assisting patrons with finding information and using library materials, equipment, and computers programs when needed. The Children’s Library Assistant must have interest and enthusiasm working with children and children’s literature. This position will include assisting the head of Children’s Services with the selection of collection materials, the weeding and replacement of materials, and covering the children’s room desk.
Work will include updating of library records, processing of materials, shelving, and the use of the computer system. The Library Assistant will assist patrons with locating materials and registering for programs. Other duties include planning and carrying out programs, and going into the community (i.e. schools, preschools, daycares) for outreach. This employee will also perform other related work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
General computer skills required, some education or library experience preferred, and knowledge of children’s literature.
PA State Police Criminal record check, PA Child Abuse History clearance and FBI fingerprints are required to begin work.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of children’s literature, passion for children’s services, ability to use computer system, ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and excellent customer service skills. Must be able to communicate in both written and oral form and work tactfully with staff and the public. Knowledge of current library practices, maintained through professional development and continuing education activities. Knowledge of new technology. Knowledge of Library’s children’s collection.
Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance and Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
This job requires the ability to sit, stand, or walk for significant periods of time. The employee must be able to lean down, reach up, use a step stool, lift 20lbs, move a book cart on wheels, carry a stack of books, and other related movements or actions.
Hours and Payrate:
$10/ hour – 25 hours per week
At least one evening per week and one weekend per month. Others as needed for programming and outreach.
