Part-Time Librarian (Mt. Lebanon Public Library)

LIBRARIAN (PT) – Children’s Department
REPORTS TO: Assoc. Director- Public Services
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
Hourly range: $19.80-$24.75/ hour (depending on experience and skill)

Are you a youth services librarian who enjoys working as part of a team? Mt. Lebanon Library is looking for a part-time staff member (approximately 20 hours per week) who loves working with children to help our amazing Children’s Library staff provide informational resources, programs, and services for the personal enrichment, education, and enjoyment of our young patrons and families.

Although our services models have changed during the coronavirus pandemic, our library is committed to providing the best possible customer service while prioritizing staff and patron safety.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide virtual and in-person Reference and Readers’ Advisory Services, with the ability to work independently and remotely as well as in-person and as part of a team.

  • Develop and Implement virtual and in-person library programs and services for children, teens, and families with an emphasis on incorporating STEM skills and activities.

  • Partner with community organizations and work with local schools and early learning facilities to meet the needs of the youth in our community.

  • Assist in the development and promotion of the Children’s Library materials collection.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of library principles of service, policies, and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of literature and materials, both print and electronic, for children, teens, and adults.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency with electronic information resources and software.
  • Knowledge of area specialization, e.g. storytelling, cataloging, early childhood services, information technology, adult programming, service to teens.
  • STEM programming knowledge or experience a plus.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and public.
  • Excellent reference and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral, written, and listening skills.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have completed a Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university.
  • Must have experience or express strong interest in working with children.
  • Evening and weekend availability.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job the employee: may be frequently required to move and/or lift materials up to 25 pounds and move a loaded book truck weighing up to 300 pounds; regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit; operate a keyboard at efficient speed and typical office equipment, including computer hardware; regularly required to communicate and exchange accurate information; use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges.” Occasionally required to attend off-site meetings. Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
