Allegheny County libraries have wonderful collections of books, but did you know that you can also borrow items that aren’t traditionally thought of as library materials? With the Library of Things, library users of all ages can discover tools and materials to help them explore, learn, create and connect.
Try before you buy
Checking out an item from the library can be a great way to test out a product before purchasing it. If you’re interested in trying a new hobby but don’t want to commit to purchasing all the equipment, see if the library has what you need to get started. Get your pickleball paddles, ukulele, synthesizer, crochet kit, or pottery wheel at the library and find out if that hobby is as fun as it sounds.
Save on one-time tools
Maybe you need a specialty tool for a home repair that you know you’ll never need to use again, or you want to do a particular DIY project but can’t justify purchasing an expensive Cricut vinyl cutter. Check out the tools you need for that project from the library! You can hem curtains with a sewing machine, clean your driveway with a pressure washer, or finish that bathroom renovation with a tile saw.
Get the party started
The library should be your first stop for game night! There are many games available for all ages, from modern classics like Gloomhaven and Wingspan to family-friendly games like Everdell and King of Tokyo. There’s a variety of video game consoles ready to check out as well, from the classic Sega Genesis to a modern Nintendo Switch. Or if you have your own console at home, borrow a video game.
If you’re having an outdoor gathering, the library has a variety of lawn games, including bocce, croquet, cornhole, and more. You can even get your furry friends in on the fun with a dog agility obstacle course kit!
