Children Services Assistant

Location: Irwin, PA
Hours: This is a part-time position; approximately 16-20 hours a week; some evenings and weekends are be required
Salary: $17.00-$19.00 an hour
The Norwin Public Library, a suburban library approximately 25 miles east of Pittsburgh, serves a population of 36,000 in Irwin, North Irwin, and North Huntingdon Twp. It is a member of the Westmoreland County Federated Library System, an alliance of 23 member public libraries serving the residents of Westmoreland County.
The Norwin Public Library is seeking an energetic, friendly individual who is committed to services for children and their caregivers and assisting patrons of all ages.
Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in Children’s collection maintenance, including shelving, shelf reading, and inventory
- Supports the Children’s Librarian in implementing programming and services to benefit children of different educational levels
- Provides reference and readers’ advisory services and technology assistance as needed
- Fosters a strong relationship with children and their caregivers
- Assists at the Circulation Desk as needed
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred plus at least two years of library experience
- Excellent communication skills and organizational skills
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, library classification systems, current social media, and general office practices and procedures.
- Understanding of standard Library principles and practices, concepts of freedom of speech, copyrights, trends, patron confidentiality, censorship, and other Library ethical issues
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, and the general public
All library positions require:
- A PA State Criminal Background check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and a FBI fingerprint-based criminal history background check
- Physical aspects of this job may include the ability to climb stairs and to occasionally lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to thirty-five (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
- Compliance with state standards of professional continuing education
