ACLA has been working with a very talented group of interns this summer on a variety of projects. We’ll be introducing them over the next few newsletters, starting with our Social Needs Interns. Maddie and Kim have been busy researching, vetting and organizing a list of local social services organizations. Their work will be compiled into a database for library staff to help them connect patrons with resources for housing, food, healthcare, and other essential human needs.
Maddie Lundquist
My name is Maddie Lundquist, and I am one of ACLA’s Social Needs Interns! I am a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in sociology with a minor in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s studies. Through my own personal experience and academic career, I have developed a deep passion for understanding and addressing the needs of diverse communities.
While I am originally from West Chester, PA, Pittsburgh has been my home for the past 4 years. This internship has not only allowed me to better understand what makes Pittsburgh so special, but also what I can do to help the city improve and thrive.
Within my position, I help to compile and vet resources for public use. Doing this work has shown me the importance of accessible care and how to help people overcome the barriers to receiving the help they need.
When I am not working on my Internship, I enjoy exploring the city and building connections with others. I also love to read and have made it my mission to appreciate as many genres as possible!
Kimberly Gray
Hello! My name is Kimberly Gray and I am one of the Social Needs Interns with ACLA this summer. I am going into my final year at the University of Pittsburgh as an English Literature major with an minor in Law, Criminal Justice, and Society. I plan to use the skills I am learning through classwork and experiential learning to pursue a career in the law field. When I’m not working or doing homework, I can be found playing with my cats, reading, or exploring the city.
I have called the Pittsburgh area home for about 15 years now. One of the aspects of Pittsburgh that makes it a vibrant city is the diversity of its residents. And diverse residents means diverse needs. I have been working on the Social Needs project to help the county library system effectly assist residents in need. Working on this project by researching and reaching out to various non-profit orgainizations has shown me that Pittsburgh residents care about each other and are willing to lend a helping had to their neighbors.
