As we approach the end of 2025, my fourth year here at ACLA, I am sure that I share the same sense of uncertainty with the world around us that many feel. It is easy to get caught up in the negatives and the difficulties we experience each day, but for all of the bad, I also know that Allegheny County libraries are bringing so much amazing good into our communities. Our world is better because libraries are in it, and I am making an effort to focus my attention on the great things happening there.
While no one wants a budget impasse and we were all getting a little nervous with how long it was taking, we were all pleasantly surprised with the results of the 2026 state budget in regard to libraries. Throughout the long and frustrating state budget process, we were told to expect flat funding. At the last minute, we learned that the budget was finally going to pass with a $5 million, or 7.1% increase, to the Public Library Subsidy. After a few years of stagnant funding, this increase is a giant boost for libraries across the Commonwealth. We still have work to do, but this is a definite win for us all.
This year, ACLA installed two new vending machines in the Allegheny County Jail Visitor Center and the lobby of the Allegheny County Family Court. These vending machines offer the opportunity for children who might be experiencing a challenging situation in their lives to pick out a book of their very own.
Libraries throughout Allegheny County have been providing programming and outreach at an amazing pace. In my visits across the county, I have been learning about what the libraries are doing for their communities and how they work tirelessly to make sure they are providing opportunities for education and recreation to everyone.
I have been in awe of the work our libraries do to engage their communities and enrich the lives of all. Let’s continue to focus on the great work that our libraries do for Allegheny County and make 2026 the best year yet for Allegheny County.
