A Message From Our CEO, Amy Anderson: Libraries Support Your Freedom to Read

Each library in Allegheny County is unique. They have different programs, different hours, and even different books. The one thing that they all have in common is the desire to provide information and entertainment to all members of their communities.

Public libraries have the responsibility to provide information and materials that cover subjects across the spectrum of knowledge. Librarians are here to provide access to information in a wide range of formats and an even wider range of topics. Sometimes, this may mean we have books on our shelves that you personally do not agree with, and that is perfectly okay. As a matter of fact, it is my sincere hope that every library has books on topics that I do not agree with. I may never read them, but it’s important that they are there for someone else who needs them.

Librarians understand. Not every topic is for everyone and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If our libraries have books on topics that are not valued by your family, we understand and completely respect your choice not to read those books. We encourage all families to come to the library together and make choices in materials that align with your needs. But, please, understand that every family has that same right. A book that may not be right for your family may be the perfect book for another family.

The library is here for all of us. Our communities are beautiful and different and this is something to be celebrated. Our world is better because we are all so different and we can all learn amazing things from each other. The library is the place to help make that vast array of knowledge and experience available to all.

We hope to see you with your family at the library! You are welcome here!
