In the United States, more than 6 million people live with dementia, Alzheimer’s, or other memory-related conditions. Family members and caregivers can often feel lost themselves figuring out ways to keep their loved ones engaged while struggling with memory loss, communication, mood shifts and other symptoms. Many libraries in Allegheny County have offered Memory Cafes and other resources for these patrons and their families, but most recently memory kits have become available for check out.

The goals of the memory kits are to foster meaningful communication, spark memories and bring joy to caregiver and loved one. With over 20 themes, the kits are designed to encourage engagement, learning, conversation, and entertainment for those with a memory-related condition. Themes include childhood memories (1950s-60s), sensory stimulations (sounds and hearing), trains, clothing, and winter, among many others.

Each kit comes packaged in a transparent plastic backpack. Inside, the contents vary by theme, but most include books, manipulatives, and a caregiver guide. For example, the cars theme (which will be available soon) contains three books, two of which are published specifically for patrons with dementia. It also includes a puzzle, transportation photo cards, and a set of Hot Wheels. Like the books, the puzzle is for those with dementia, and the photo cards are designed to prompt conversation. The guide includes a QR code for a car bingo and other resources. Some guides include playlists or discussion questions.
